Pass By: Lake Pontchartrain, New Orleans, LA

You'll cross the Bonnet Carre Spillway, a flood outlet for the river, and see a panoramic view of Lake Pontchartrain on your way to the plantation. Pass by the Evergreen, Felicity and St. Joseph plantations, where rich crops of sugar cane, cotton, and indigo from these fertile lands once traveled to various ports of trade.

Pass By: Mississippi River, LA

Meet your guide at the designated meeting point in New Orleans and journey to the historic Whitney Plantation, one of the antebellum estates located along the Mississippi River.

Stop At: Whitney Plantation, 5099 Highway 18, Wallace, LA 70049-2803

Arrive at the Whitney Plantation, which dates back more than 260 years and is now a working museum dedicated to the understanding of slavery in the American South. With your guide, visit museum exhibits and restored buildings including historical slave cabins, some of which remain from the original 22 on-site. See the Big House, which is one of the finest surviving examples of Spanish Creole architecture in Louisiana, and learn about the daily life of former slaves at Whitney as recorded by the Federal Writers' Project. At the end of your 5-hour tour, you're returned to central New Orleans.

This was my first visit to a Plantation. I chose Whitney because it focuses on the slavery aspect of plantation life. It was a great tour. Eye opening, educational and totally activated my tear ducts. Our guide was very knowledgeable and funny. I recommend to this tour to everyone, families included.

This was such a great tour. It pulled on my heartstrings to see the names and hear stories of past slaves who lived on the plantation. However, the perspective provided is rarely provided in American schools, museums, historic tours, etc...I highly recommend visiting.

I heard about the Whitney Plantation tour from a tour guide unrelated to the Whitney. I signed up, and it was completely worth it. It was a very humid day with thunder, giving the tour a sort of ominous atmosphere. It's about an hour outside of New Orleans, on the West Bank of the Mississippi river. The bus guide gave us lots of great info about the countryside we were driving through and general history about Louisiana. We were met by our Whitney tour guide who walked us through the plantation, giving us plenty of time to explore. I've been on other tours of plantations and this is the only one done through the eyes of the enslaved. It was very emotional at times. I highly recommend this tour.
